Born into a family steeped in jazz heritage, Mykah comes from a long line of jazz greats. Her grandfather, Buddy Montgomery, was a world renowned jazz pianist and vibraphonist who made significant contributions to the jazz scene in the mid-20th century. His work as a bandleader and collaborator with artists such as Miles Davis, Thelonious Monk, and John Coltrane helped shape the sound of jazz in the post-bop era. Mykah’s granduncle, Wes Montgomery, was a legendary jazz guitarist who is widely considered one of the most important jazz guitarists of the 20th century. His virtuosic fingerstyle technique and soulful improvisations made him a jazz icon and one of the most influential jazz guitarists of all time. Her great-uncle, Monk Montgomery, was a pioneering jazz bassist who played a vital role in shaping the sound of jazz and recorded with many of the greats of the genre.
Growing up in the midst of jazz royalty, Mykah was exposed to the art of music at a very young age. She would often find herself mimicking her mother’s beautiful singing voice or sitting under her grandfather’s piano as he worked with various artists, listening as they crafted their timeless compositions. The notes that filled the room were more than just sounds to her, they were stories, feelings, and memories that she would carry with her for a lifetime. It was in these moments, as she watched and listened to the greats at work, that Mykah’s love for music was born and she knew that it was her destiny to follow in their footsteps.
Mykah began her professional music career in the emerging 1990’s Hip Hop era. As a member of Black Sheep’s female R&B trio, Emage, she signed to Polygram/Mercury Records, now Universal Music Group. With Emage, she recorded and shared the stage with notable artists such as Grammy award-winning singer, Jamie Foxx, global sensations The Backstreet Boys, Brian McKnight, Tony Toni Tone, Narada Michael Walden, Black Sheep, and of course, her grandfather Buddy Montgomery, among others.
Her own compositions received rave reviews in the UK and Japan, and her singles, “Love is Blind” and Little Boy Blue,” debuted at #14 and peaked at #7 in just two and a half weeks after their releases.
After her time with Emage, Mykah shifted her focus to producing, writing, and arranging as a solo artist. Her solo music career has been diverse and accomplished, with one solo album in the R&B genre, “ME & U”, produced by Black Ram Productions & Publishing, BMI, and released in September 2011. In addition to her R&B album, Mykah has also released several singles in the Urban Christian genre, including “Thank You For My Portion,” “He’s Real,” and “Real Love” — a song written by Kirk Franklin. These singles solidified her sound in the Contemporary gospel scene and showcased her versatility as a singer. Yet, she has also shared the stage with notable artists such as rock royalty U2, Ike Turner, Big Brother and the Holding Company, Najee, Jonathan Butler, Heavy D, Kindred the Family Soul, and Jon B.
Mykah is a true artist, and her voice is truly one of a kind. Her range and sound have been described as a captivating blend of virtuosity and emotion, characterized by its mezzo-soprano range and ability to effortlessly navigate the full spectrum of human feeling. From the soaring sax-like notes of her upper register to the rich, soulful depths of her lower range, her vocalizations are infused with a unique blend of sweetness, sensuality, substance, and soul. It is this innate talent and powerful legacy that makes her an artist to appreciate and a person of notability.
