Mykah Montgomery is a multi-talented professional known for her work as an advisor, author, advocate, and artist. Born on April 3rd in Oakland, California, Mykah is the granddaughter of the late renowned jazz pianist and vibraphonist Buddy Montgomery and grandniece of legendary jazz guitarist Wes Montgomery and bassist Monk. From a young age, music has been a central part of Mykah’s life, and she has inherited a powerful legacy rich in artistry, creativity, and innovation.

She began her career in the music industry joining Hip Hop artist Black Sheep’s female R&B singing group, Emage, signed to Polygram Mercury Records now Universal Music Group. With Emage, Mykah recorded and shared the stage with notable artists such as Oscar winner Jamie Foxx, The Backstreet Boys, Brian McKnight, Black Sheep, and Buddy Montgomery, among others. Mykah’s composition Love is Blind, received rave reviews in the UK and Japan, and her singles peaked at #7 on the UK R&B charts just two weeks after its release.

In addition to her work as a musician, Mykah has also made a significant impact as an author and advocate for children’s literacy. She is the CEO and founder of LARs (Leaders are Readers, Inc.), an organization that has donated hundreds of books to youth in urban communities. Mykah’s work in this area has earned her recognition from the Honorable Libby Schaaf, former Mayor of Oakland, who declared April 3rd “Mykah Montgomery Day” in recognition of her diligent work as an activist for children’s literacy and anti-bullying efforts.

As an author, Mykah has written four children’s books, including “The Little Girl Who Wanted a Tail.” Coupled with an original song composed by Montgomery, the book and song mirror Mykah’s desire to address and eradicate the feeling of being “different” despite childhood preoccupations and pastimes, thus the title of their single, “Different,” performed by her daughter, Mylaan Imani, who was only 8 years old at the time.

Mykah’s dedication to empowering others extends to her career and roles as a motivational speaker, consultant and advisor. She has over 20 years of experience providing valuable strategic insight, effective cross-functional management, and exceptional customer success in the organizations she both works and volunteers with. Mykah’s expertise includes strategic planning and development, customer advocacy and engagement, and team building and management. She has managed and trained teams of up to 75 employees and has successfully grown accounts under her purview, contributing up to 85% of company revenue in some cases.

Miraculously enough, between raising her daughter, writing books, performing music, and balancing her career, she has also managed to pursue matters of personal development for herself.  In 2011, Mykah furthered her own education, earning an Executive MBA from Saint Mary’s College of California, School of Economics and Business Administration, where she is a distinguished Alumna of the Year. She is also a recipient of the esteemed Jefferson Award for Public Service, founded by Jacqueline Kennedy Onassis, Robert Taft, Jr. and Samuel Beard. Mykah’s work has also been recognized by professional organizations such as Delta Sigma Theta Sorority Inc., National Coalition of 100 Black Women Inc., and The Links Incorporated, and many others.
